Since its discovery in 1856, glyoxal has been an important component in chemical applications. Due to its diverse properties, glyoxal can be used in a wide range of innovative applications. Glyoxal is readily biodegradable and is listed as an accredited chemical substance for the production of paper. It is also listed for food packaging by the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) in Germany, and by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the U.S. Glyoxal is a colorless to yellow liquid, with a faint odor. It is also miscible with water.
