Building a better world today, tomorrow, together.
As a global leader in chemical and ingredient distribution, we work at the intersection of science and technology, helping customers bring forward sustainable solutions to achieve their ESG goals. That means we are more than a distributor: we are a technical innovator and supply chain connector, exploring new ways to take your products to the next level and solve challenges for a better tomorrow.
Why is sustainability important to your bottom line? Sustainability can mean a lot of things depending on your perspective or business imperative and where you are on the sustainability journey. We all want to meet the moment, safeguarding people and the planet, while keeping businesses successful and profitable. Since 2008, we've made substantial progress in sustainability as a responsible company doing just that, and we will continue to lead the way in our commitments to driving a sustainable future in distribution.
Sustainable & Natural Product Portfolio
A framework for sustainability at the product level
Because there is no global definition of sustainability at the product level, we developed a Sustainable & Natural Product Framework to help customers evaluate sustainability for ingredients and raw materials. The Framework is already enabling productive communication on product sustainability and we are just beginning. As innovation and regulations emerge, our Framework will evolve. Visit here often as we add new Sustainable & Natural Product Skus every week!
Here are the first six sustainable & natural product characteristics. Click on each one for definitions and examples.
Natural or Bio-based
Bio-based and/or Natural
This sustainability characteristic seeks to provide customers with important information regarding the feedstocks and processing methods used to create each product. To be considered bio-based, a product must contain ≥25% bio-based feedstocks by mass. Similarly, to be considered natural a product must contain ≥25% natural content, which is derived from natural feedstocks and processed minimally using methods outlined by ISO 16128:1-2016. Please note that here, “natural” does not refer to specific regulatory language such as that defined by TSCA or REACH, nor does it include ingredients from fossil-based feedstocks.

Carbon footprinting is considered a “Sustainability Characteristic,” for the purposes of this framework, when there is a life cycle assessment (LCA) or product carbon footprint (PCF) calculation data, that shows a ≥10% reduction vs a conventional fossil-based product. Ideally, it will be verified or audited by an accredited third party, but this is not a requirement for inclusion.
If a PCF or LCA does not show a ≥10% reduction, we will utilize this data in different ways, i.e., for support in providing customers with PCFs, for scope 3 mapping, etc. When providing PCF figures to customers, we may need to work under NDA.

Safer Substitutes are materials which offer comparable performance in application to a relevant conventional material but with the benefit of reduced human health and/or environmental hazards. For the Sustainable & Natural Product Framework, we define a safer substitute in a practical and data-based manner, acknowledging that all substances, including safer substances may carry some risk upon exposure.
Chemical substitution is technically challenging, and we encourage customers to do their own testing and research to determine that the substitution is right for their needs.

Circular materials are those which support the principles of a circular economy through responsible capture and reuse. Examples include closed loop-solvents and industrial processing materials that have been reprocessed.
Circular materials support the principles of a circular economy through responsible capture and reuse.
Products meeting this characteristic are produced from the recovery and reprocessing of wastes or residues. This can apply to the reuse of wastes and processing residues and can include pre-consumer and post-consumer waste. *
These are products supplied with a specific socially focused related claim, verification, approval, listing, certification, attestation, or accreditation from an independent party. The certification or accreditation may indicate the producer, supplier, or product meets certain standards which enable social impact to be realized in a material's production.*
Products with this sustainability characteristic have a specific environmental–related claim, verification, approval, listing, certification, attestation, or accreditation from an independent party. The accreditation must be at the level of the product and not the company. Third-party accreditations are considered environmental when they address criteria aligned with delivering environmental benefits such as reduced land use, water and waste impact reduction, biodegradability, or regenerative practices of production.

Sustainability in Action
Case study: Decarbonization across the supply chain
80% CO2 reduction from supplier to customer delivery
Challenge: Source products efficiently and with the lowest carbon footprint
Help customers in the Midwest secure supply of essential products and materials using a safe, reliable, and sustainable transportation network, while also optimizing to meet sustainability goals such as lower CO2 emissions.
Solution: Optimize supply chain by switching form trucks to railcars
Together with leading suppliers of essential chemistries and sustainable solutions, Univar Solutions helped optimize the supplier’s supply chain from trucks to railcars
This solution improved local supply reliability for Midwest customers that were previously served by trucks from the Gulf Coast, and enabled Univar Solutions to package locally and utilize our fleet, which ultimately provided better overall service and a reduction in CO2 emissions
Results: 80% reduction in CO2 emissions from source to customer
This optimized supply chain solution is expected to bring an 80% CO2 emissions reduction or 57 MT annually, equivalent to removing 12.3 gasoline powered cars from the road for an entire year or the total energy consumption of 7.2 homes for one year
