  • Water and humidity resistance
  • Hardness and mar resistance
  • Block and print resistance

Building the Foundation with Resins

Resin selection is one of the most important decisions in a wood coating formulation. For waterborne industrial wood coatings, acrylic technologies such as ROSHIELD™ 3188 Acrylic Emulsion offer a combination of stain resistance, chemical resistance, clarity, and hardness. 

For higher performance requirements, formulators may explore polyurethane dispersion technologies. PR-1790 from Quaker Color is a UV-curable aliphatic polyurethane dispersion that delivers excellent adhesion, hardness, gloss, water resistance, and chemical resistance for demanding applications. 

Selecting the right resin platform ultimately depends on the target application, cure method, performance targets, and regulatory requirements.

Achieving the Perfect Matte Finish

Many customers today are looking for low-gloss and ultra-matte finishes that maintain a natural wood appearance. The challenge is that reducing gloss often impacts clarity, and even chemical resistance. This is where matting technologies become critical.
SYLOID® AQ 800 Silica and SYLOID® AQ 880 Silica were specifically developed for environmentally friendly waterborne wood coatings that require deep matte finishes while maintaining excellent clarity and chemical resistance. 

Another option is CAB-O-SIL® MT-6460 fumed silica matting agent. Fumed silica technologies can provide high matting efficiency, smooth surface appearance, and superior clarity at relatively low use levels. They are particularly well suited for waterborne and UV-cured wood coating systems based on acrylics and polyurethane dispersions.

Fine-Tuning Surface Performance

Once the primary film properties are established, formulators often focus on improving slip, anti-blocking performance, abrasion resistance, and scratch resistance.

Silicone additives can make a significant contribution here. For example, DOWSIL™ 51 Additive, DOWSIL™ 52 Additive, and DOWSIL™ 210S Additive are commonly considered for water-based wood coating systems where enhanced slip, scratch resistance, abrasion resistance, and anti-blocking performance are desired. These additives are designed to provide performance improvements without negatively affecting the mechanical properties of the coating.
