Ethylene Glycol

Ethylene glycol, also known as monoethylene glycol or MEG, is an odorless, colorless, hygroscopic liquid. It exhibits low volatility and low viscosity and is also fully miscible in water and many other organic liquids. The hydrogenation of ethylene oxide produces ethylene glycol, a chemical compound obtained from petroleum or natural gas processing. It can also be synthesized from other starting materials, such as acetylene or ethanol.
Because of the reactivity of the hydroxyl group and the high degree of solubility, ethylene glycol provides a broad range of applications. Besides serving as an intermediate to chemical synthesis, it can produce resins and lower the freezing point of water, lending its efficacy as an anti-freeze. It is also used as a solvent in manufacturing paints, inks, and other coatings and as a starting material for producing other chemicals, such as polyethylene terephthalate (PET), which is used to make plastic bottles and other containers.
