Zero- to low- VOC coating formulations: performance without compromise

Learn how to reduce VOC emissions with compliant, high-performance formulations that deliver the adhesion, durability, and appearance customers rely on.

How to maintain performance while reducing VOCs

The coatings industry continues to take meaningful action to reduce environmental impact by regulating the effects of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). For decades, EPA clean air regulations have pushed manufacturers toward developing zero- to low-VOC coatings – a trend that is now accelerating globally. Research has highlighted the impact VOCs have not only on the environment but also on users and end users, driving ongoing regulatory pressure to further limit emissions and mitigate impact.

In response, coatings manufacturers have reformulated existing products or developed new technologies using more sustainable raw materials. At the same time, ingredient suppliers are innovating to deliver chemistries that help customers meet evolving requirements. While reducing VOC emissions is a significant step toward lowering environmental impact and improving product safety, it has introduced a familiar challenge: zero- and low-VOC formulations can sometimes compromise performance.

Supporting you in making impactful formulations

Raw material manufacturers have stepped up to meet the demands of the industry, creating innovative alternatives to ingredients traditionally used in solvent-based systems as the market accelerates its transition toward waterborne technologies. Our suppliers offer a broad portfolio of zero- to low-VOC resins and additives for interior and exterior coatings across a wide range of applications, delivering measurable performance benefits, including:

  • Corrosion and heat resistance
  • Low odor profiles
  • Improved adhesion
  • Enhanced scrub resistance
  • APEO-free options
  • Preservation of appearance and aesthetics

Where challenge brings added benefits

While reducing VOC content is a primary goal, many suppliers have taken further steps, developing technologies that minimize waste, extend coating life, and reduce environmental impact across the entire lifecycle of a coating.

Examples include:

  • UV-reflective ingredients that help lower surface temperatures on roofs and walls, improving energy efficiency and reducing heat-related degradation.

  • UV-protective additives that shield coatings from sun-induced damage, helping maintain appearance and performance.

Case study: Solving low-VOC formulation challenges with our technical experts and Solution Center

Recently, a customer needed support developing a low-VOC primer that would bond reliably to aluminum, galvanized steel, and aged alkyd substrates. After encountering adhesion issues, they partnered with our technical experts at our Houston Solution Center for hands-on guidance.

Leveraging our laboratory’s formulation experience and broad product portfolio, we quickly developed a low-VOC, waterborne industrial primer with excellent adhesion across the specified substrates. A sample was promptly prepared for evaluation, and the customer has since moved forward with scaling the formulation.

This is just one example of how Ingredients + Specialties from Univar Solutions partners with you to overcome formulation challenges and meet low-VOC regulatory requirements. Our technical experts bring decades of experience, helping you achieve performance standards and compliance your products demand.
