Formulating Reef-Safe Sunscreens Without Oxybenzone and Octinoxate
With growing awareness around personal health, eco-driven ingredients, and the impact of sunscreen on marine life—especially coral reefs—many destinations like Hawaii, Key West, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Bonaire, Aruba, and Palau have banned ingredients like Oxybenzone and Octinoxate. - SunSpheres™ Powder: Functions as an aesthetically pleasing SPF booster. Built on a unique hollow sphere technology that enables greater SPF efficiency in sun care and daily wear SPF products. The hollow spheres raise the UV absorption over the whole UVA/UVB spectrum, working equally well with organic and inorganic actives.
- Epitex™ 66 Polymer: Excellent film former. Low tackiness. Provides outstanding water resistance, improved feel on skin and ease of processing in a variety of formulation types, including o/w, w/o and w/SI formulations.
- PARSOL® 1789: Oil-soluble, highly efficient UVA filter. Only globally approved broad UVA spectrum filter. Protects the skin against UVA radiation (320–400 nm) and minimizes the harmful long-term effects of sunlight exposure. Protects the skin from premature photoagingand pigmentation.
- PARSOL® 340: Oil-soluble UVB filter. Protects the skin against UVB radiation and minimizes the harmful long-term effects of sunlight exposure. Effective photostabilizerof PARSOL® 1789. Good solvent for solid UV filters.

Makes stable small particle size emulsions. Able to emulsify a wide range of oil phases. Suitable for standard and PEG-free formulation systems.
- DOWSIL™ 9546: Provides dry smoothness and a light, silky, non-greasy skin feel. Enhances the aesthetics of volatile silicone fluids. Reduces tackiness of formulations.
