Surfactants, also known as surface-active agents, are a class of compounds that have the ability to lower the surface tension between two immiscible phases, such as oil and water. They are amphiphilic molecules, meaning they possess both hydrophilic (water-loving) and hydrophobic (water-repelling) properties within the same molecule.
The structure of a surfactant typically consists of a hydrophilic head group and a hydrophobic tail group. The head group can be ionic (cationic or anionic) or non-ionic, while the tail group is usually a long-chain hydrocarbon.
Surfactants are classified into four main types based on their ionic nature:
- Anionic surfactants
- Cationic surfactants
- Nonionic surfactants
- Amphoteric surfactants
Surfactants have a wide range of applications due to their ability to lower surface tension, solubilize or emulsify immiscible liquids, and modify the wetting behavior of surfaces.

- Detergents and cleaners
- Personal care products (shampoos, soaps, cosmetics)
- Emulsifiers and dispersants
- Wetting agents
- Foaming agents
- Textile and leather processing
- Agrochemicals and pesticides
- Enhanced oil recovery
- Paints and coatings

Product Information
Caflon® Amphoteric Surfactants
These contain both anionic and cationic groups and can behave as either anionic or cationic depending on the pH of the solution. Examples include betaines and amino acid derivatives.
Caflon® Anionic Surfactants
These have a negatively charged head group and are the most commonly used type of surfactants. Examples include sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), alkyl benzene sulfonates (ABS), and fatty acid salts.
Caflon® Cationic Surfactants
These have a positively charged head group and are often used as fabric softeners, hair conditioners, and antimicrobial agents. Examples include quaternary ammonium compounds and amine salts.
Caflon® Nonionic Surfactants
These do not have an ionic charge and are widely used in detergents, personal care products, and industrial applications. Examples include alcohol ethoxylates, alkylphenol ethoxylates, and fatty acid esters.
