Toluene is a liquid aromatic hydrocarbon that is colorless with a sweet, pungent odor. Although it is immiscible with water, it is miscible with a variety of solvents including ethanol, benzene, diethyl ether, acetone, carbon disulfide and glacial acetic acid. It is a mono-substituted benzene derivative and considered an aromatic hydrocarbon. Toluene is predominantly used as a refinery feedstock, industrial solvent, and as an additive for gasoline.
