Triton™ X

These important surfactants are multi-functional and primarily used in paint and coatings applications. They play an important role in emulsifier mixtures used to manufacture emulsion polymers, stabilizers in latex polymers, and wetting powders.  

The surface-active agents are prepared with a reaction between octylphenol and ethylene oxide. They are commonly referred to as Octylphenol Ethoxylates (OPEs), with the “x” value representing the average number of ethylene oxide units in the ether side chain of the product.

Functions

• Emulsification
  Because of their wide range of hydrophilic-lipophilic balance (HLB), the octylphenyl polyether alcohols offer a wide variety of possible emulsifier combinations. For some purposes, a mixture of two or more TRITON nonionics may provide more effective emulsification than a single material. 
• Emulsion Polymerization
  Several TRITON™ Nonionic Surfactants are useful as primary emulsifiers or in mixed anionicnonionic emulsifying systems in the preparation of acrylic polymer emulsions. 
• Solubilization
  Many water-insoluble materials can be dispersed or solubilized in water by the octylphenyl polyether alcohols. The hydrotropic effects of the nonionic allow maximum incorporation of the anionic without the need for adding a coupling agent, such as alcohol, and provide high-quality performance.
