Rich in inulin, the root of the chicory plant is an excellent natural source. Inulin has been part of our daily diet for centuries and is the first ingredient verified as natural according to the latest International Organization for Standardization (ISO) guidelines. The roots are processed using sophisticated extraction and purification techniques. Strict quality control guarantees the high quality of Frutafit® inulin and Frutalose® oligofructose.
Chicory inulin in food and supplements: Creating healthier products
Sensus Frutafit® inulin and Frutalose® oligofructose are functional ingredients extracted from chicory roots. These prebiotic dietary fibers provide health benefits with texturizing properties and a neutral to sweet taste. Chicory inulin comes in various powders and liquids with different technological properties. Both liquids and powders contain similar nutritional and health properties.
Both products are soluble dietary fibers with prebiotic properties and a low caloric value. The products are easy to use and can be added to everyday foods without affecting their taste. Chicory root fibers also have beneficial functional properties for food manufacturers, such as modifying texture, improving mouth feel, replacing sugar and fat, and gelling and water-binding properties.
These functional ingredients are used worldwide to make various food products. Applications include dairy foods, bread and bakery products, confectionery, cereals and cereal bars, savory, infant nutrition, nutraceuticals and beverages. Innovative applications for chicory inulin are constantly discovered.
GRAS status of chicory inulin
Chicory inulin is a safe ingredient in most people's diets. Chicory inulin is a dietary fiber from a natural source, the chicory root. It can be labeled on packaging as chicory inulin, chicory oligofructose, fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS), chicory root fiber, and chicory inulin dietary fiber. Frutafit® inulin and Frutalose® oligofructose are recognized as dietary fibers in the US, Europe, and most countries worldwide. They are classified as ingredients, not additives, and have no E-numbers. In the United States, Frutafit® and Frutalose® have GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe) status. The full range of chicory inulin and oligofructose products qualifies as natural according to ISO/TS 19657:2017. Chicory root fiber was the first dietary fiber to achieve this verification. All products are non-GMO, gluten-free, and vegan. Sensus is FSSC 22000, Kosher and Halal certified.
How much inulin should we eat?
The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommend a fiber intake of at least 25-28 grams daily. EFSA estimates that the actual daily fiber intake is, on average, 20 grams, with the lowest intake of only 10 grams.
Health authorities recognize the addition of inulin as an easy way to reduce this 'fiber gap.' As per the International Scientific Association for Probiotics and Prebiotics (ISAPP), a minimum of three grams or more of prebiotics should be consumed per day to confer a benefit.
Chicory root in nutraceutical supplements
Due to its high bonding capacity, inulin is a suitable excipient with filler and binder properties for direct compaction of tablets.
